Children Book Illustrator for Hire

When there is an agreement between the Author or Agent and the illustrator, to work for hire, the illustrator who signs such an agreement is called illustrator for hire. Usually this kind of agreement states that the material created will belong to the Author/agent, depending upon the terms and conditions of the agreement. There is no royalty involved, unless mentioned. You may find such illustrators on the internet and they can also be found on the websites of illustration companies. Many of such illustrators are also working as freelancers and you should generally see their portfolio before making a decision. Some of these illustrators are very talented also. Before you make sure which illustrator to use, you may ask for a sample and once you are happy with the sample, you can ask the illustrator to continue on your project.  You can discuss how the payment will be made, it can either be half advance and half after the finishing the sketches or finishing the full illustrations.

It is not easy to choose the right illustrator for your story and specially with so many options available in terms of illustrators, the job becomes even more difficult. The best option is to first understand the style of illustration which will suit your story and then ask the illustrators to make samples in that style. If you think that you know some of the good illustrators, you may even ask for suggestions. Suggestions are always good if they come from the right source. After you receive some samples, you can review them carefully and make your mind. You should choose the illustrator who is able to capture the characters expressions and other details in the best way. Also, it is important that the illustrator is flexible and ready to implement any revisions and modifications wanted by the Author. Choosing a good illustrator with a bad attitude or inflexible attitude can disturb the whole process of illustrations and further processes of self publishing.

Once you have selected the illustrator, you must sign a contract and all the important points must be mentioned in the contract like the terms of payment, process of deliver, originality of work, compensation in case of failure of delivery, work termination in between, reproduction of artwork  etc. It should be signed  with the mutual consent of both parties. All the points should be acceptable and agreeable. Once the contract is signed, the process of illustration can begin and as an Author, one must be quick in providing any feedback which the illustrator requests. Any delayed response from the Author can be a cause of delay to the project and the illustrator should also be quick in responding to the requests of the Author to make some changes that are important from the story point of view.

Wish you all the very best in selecting a good children book illustrator and wish you all the very best for the success of your book.

Various Aspects of Self Publishing

What exactly self publishing means?

When as author decides to publish his/her book without the help of a Publisher who can distribute the book in the market, the Author is called the self publisher. You may get confused when you see so many agencies that claim to be self publishers, but you need to understand that these agencies are helping you to become a self publisher by offering the required services. At the end of the day, you are the one who is investing in the book and you will be the one who will get the benefit if your book sells well.

What are the services needed for self publishing?

First of all, the manuscript should be ready and then you need illustration in case of children book, and for other books, just the manuscript will do. After that you will need someone who can create a cover page for your book, the front and the back cover. You will also need the book to be designed, for there are many things like the layout of text, font setting, text adjustment, font selection, illustration layout etc. Usually all these things come under the designing. After the designing, you need an ISBN number and a barcode to be able to sell your book. The ISBN and Barcode is also placed on the back cover by the designer .And finally the printing, so that you can get the hard copy of the book and sell it.

You can easily place your book (hard copy of the book) for sale on amazon.com which has its expanded distribution with Barnes and noble and Baler and taylor etc. Your readers can order a book from these sites and the billing information will be shared with you automatically.

You can also create an e-book version of your book and place it on platforms like the Kindle for sale. Now a days every Author does that because its easy to download and read on any electronic device and many readers are preferring e-books.

Usually all the agencies which claim to be self publishers offer you the services like the children book illustrations and book designing and also E-books. They will also offer you marketing services which includes internet marketing and popularizing your book on the social media.

Will I make any profit?

As none of the self publisher will be selling your book in any of the retail outlet, you will be yourself responsible for all the marketing and selling. You will need to monitor your marketing efforts very closely, be it internet marketing or the physical marketing. There are Author’s who have done very well as Self publishers and they continue to write more and more books.  The better networking you have, the better it is. Don’t hesitate to promote your book among your local libraries, kids schools, communities, friends etc. They all are important audience.

Picture Book Illustration

picture book illustration

This picture book illustration is an editorial and article style of illustration and there is a character in the foreground and various couples in the background. The readers can be of any age and usually there is a message which is conveyed through these picture book illustrations. The message may be relevant to young adults, adults and others. The illustrations done for such genre are cartoon style of illustrations and the images drawn clearly convey the fact that the persons in the background are adults spending some time in a disco.

Everybody is enjoying by dancing or talking and the environment is electric with very high energy and everything is very vibrant. The colors used are not very bright but the sequencing done with purple color and black shading done below the characters is giving the right effect and illustrates that the energy is high here and everyone is very dynamic.

The reader with spectacles is trying to give a message that indulging in such activities may lead to a good time spent right now but at the expense of studies and thus the future may get affected. The central character here is a teenage girl who is under peer pressure to go out and get social. On the other hand there is also pressure of studies.

Illustrating this scene took a lot of time to make a mental picture first and then bringing it in the form of an illustration. This is digital illustration where the sketch was done on Paper using pencil but the coloring was done using Photoshop.

Kids Book Illustration

kids book illustration

This illustration style is realistic style of illustration and done in water color. The characters are photograph type and the background used is very real. While sketching the illustration, it was kept in mind to give very real appearance to all the elements, including the human characters as well as the animals and other background elements. The chariot shown in the illustration is based on the kind of chariots used in the earlier part of 20th century.

This scene shows a father and a son who have arrived at their home after a journey and are standing outside their house and Father is proudly keeping is hand on the shoulder of his Son who is now a young kid. The background made in this illustration is deep and goes beyond the scope of the trees, there are mountains in far depth and covered with clouds and when we move closer to the characters, we have the complete area covered by a bunch of trees giving a very natural look to the illustration.

This kids book illustration has been created keeping in mind the kids of the age group of 7-12 years. The colors used are not very bright, they are rather dull and the idea was to make the illustrations for more realistic situations. The setting of this illustration is late afternoon and the shadows are made accordingly moving from left to right. The dressing of Father and son is almost identical and the main reason was to keep the attention away from their appearance and to bring the focus on the overall scene as a whole and not on a particular object.

Children Book Illustration

children book illustration

This style of children book illustration is a digital illustration and the characters are more like cartoons and not realistic. In these kinds of illustrations, the main focus is on giving the right expressions. In this illustration, the squirrels are laughing and so are the rabbits and the birds looking very curious. The creature sitting below the tree is indifferent to what is happening around him. The background is relatively small and the reason for a limited background is that I wanted to keep the focus around the main characters that is the Animals.

The placement of animals has been done in such a way that none of them loose out their presence because of others and yet, all are seen doing their own set of activities. There is a very restricted view of the background from the sides of the trees and a few tree are seen along with a ridge of a mountain which is not very high. The colors used are bright and vibrant in order to give more life to the characters.

The idea was to make the overall scene very engaging and full of activity and the ideal readers were 4-6 year old and these kids usually get attracted by illustrations with bright colours and expressions which are happy or full of surprise. As a picture book illustrator, it is of great importance to catch the essence of the story and the scene completely. Once the idea is clear and mental imaging is done, its easier to create children book illustrations and this also helps on choosing the right kind of colors.
