When there is an agreement between the Author or Agent and the illustrator, to work for hire, the illustrator who signs such an agreement is called illustrator for hire. Usually this kind of agreement states that the material created will belong to the Author/agent, depending upon the terms and conditions of the agreement. There is no royalty involved, unless mentioned. You may find such illustrators on the internet and they can also be found on the websites of illustration companies. Many of such illustrators are also working as freelancers and you should generally see their portfolio before making a decision. Some of these illustrators are very talented also. Before you make sure which illustrator to use, you may ask for a sample and once you are happy with the sample, you can ask the illustrator to continue on your project. You can discuss how the payment will be made, it can either be half advance and half after the finishing the sketches or finishing the full illustrations.
It is not easy to choose the right illustrator for your story and specially with so many options available in terms of illustrators, the job becomes even more difficult. The best option is to first understand the style of illustration which will suit your story and then ask the illustrators to make samples in that style. If you think that you know some of the good illustrators, you may even ask for suggestions. Suggestions are always good if they come from the right source. After you receive some samples, you can review them carefully and make your mind. You should choose the illustrator who is able to capture the characters expressions and other details in the best way. Also, it is important that the illustrator is flexible and ready to implement any revisions and modifications wanted by the Author. Choosing a good illustrator with a bad attitude or inflexible attitude can disturb the whole process of illustrations and further processes of self publishing.
Once you have selected the illustrator, you must sign a contract and all the important points must be mentioned in the contract like the terms of payment, process of deliver, originality of work, compensation in case of failure of delivery, work termination in between, reproduction of artwork etc. It should be signed with the mutual consent of both parties. All the points should be acceptable and agreeable. Once the contract is signed, the process of illustration can begin and as an Author, one must be quick in providing any feedback which the illustrator requests. Any delayed response from the Author can be a cause of delay to the project and the illustrator should also be quick in responding to the requests of the Author to make some changes that are important from the story point of view.
Wish you all the very best in selecting a good children book illustrator and wish you all the very best for the success of your book.
